Plot summary
Eva Stone holds strict conservative beliefs, and for her a woman's life has no meaning without a child. She and her husband John, a British politician and businessman of Spanish origin, have been married four years and have no children. A Spanish theater company visits London to stage the play Yerma. Its head, Victor, is someone Eva and John knew long ago, and the attraction between Eva and Victor revives, opening a chance for her to become pregnant. What stands in Eva's way is not only her childlessness: the social conventions around her leave no room for a child born outside marriage.
