Plot summary
Kelly is a fur trapper whose standing with the Sioux comes from a single act: he once saved the life of Chief Gall, and Gall lets him set his traps in Sioux country in the late 1870s. Kelly reluctantly takes on Anse Harper, a tenderfoot, as an assistant. The two come upon Wahleeah, a sick Arapaho woman held captive by Gall and wanted by both the chief and his nephew Sayapi. Kelly keeps her through the winter to cure her and gives Gall his word that she will be returned in the spring. Anse falls in love with her, and Sayapi vows to take her back and to kill Kelly.
