Plot summary
In 1979 Margaret Thatcher becomes prime minister with a manifesto promising a Welsh-language television channel. Months after the election her government reverses that pledge, and the Home Office under home secretary Willie Whitelaw announces it will not establish the channel. Protests follow across Wales. Cymdeithas yr Iaith campaigns for the channel, alongside Plaid Cymru members of parliament Dafydd Wigley and Dafydd Elis-Thomas. Gwynfor Evans, president of Plaid Cymru, says he will hunger strike from the first of October and starve to death unless the government honors its promise.
