Plot summary
In 1999, retired judiciary investigator Benjamín Espósito begins writing a novel about a 1974 case he could never put aside. In June of that year, a young woman is raped and murdered in her house in Buenos Aires, and her husband, the bank employee Ricardo Morales, is left a widower. Espósito promises to find the killer, working with Pablo Sandoval, his alcoholic partner, and with Irene Menéndez-Hastings, the department's new chief. Espósito's rival Romano pins the crime on two construction workers, one of them a Bolivian immigrant, who are tortured into confessing. Looking through photographs Morales gave him, Espósito notices the same young man appearing again and again, watching the woman, and begins to ask who he is.

- The film's centrepiece is a single continuous five-minute shot that encompasses an entire stadium during a live football match: the camera flies over the ground, crosses the field between players, follows the protagonist through the crowd and ends under the lights on the pitch. Visual effects supervisor Rodrigo S. Tomasso designed it.
- That stadium sequence was shot at the ground of football club Huracán and took three months of pre-production, three days of shooting and nine months of post-production, using two hundred extras while visual effects filled the stands with nearly fifty thousand fans.
- The Secret in Their Eyes is only the second Argentine film to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, after The Official Story in 1985, and the win made Argentina the first South American country to win the award twice.
