Plot summary
Fifteen-year-old Renee shares a house in New Mexico with her mother Linda and Linda's boyfriend Chase. Her father is dead, her mother has been depressed since, and Chase is selfish and given to violence. Renee keeps reptiles and arachnids as pets and stays apart from other people. After a quarrel about Chase at dinner, she runs out into the desert and reaches the place where something fell from the sky, and she frees an alien caught in a hunter's car. She comes back the next day with equipment, among it Chase's revolver, releases the creature from a jaw trap and feels a bond form. She hides it in the basement of the house and names it Croak. CIA agents have followed the creature's arrival.
