Plot summary
Carolina Rannell arrives on the boardwalk looking for her father's second wife, Ginny, who waits tables at a clam house on Coney Island in the 1950s. Her father Humpty threw her out years earlier, when she married Frank, a mobster, instead of finishing college. Now she needs somewhere to hide: she says Frank is after her because she gave the FBI evidence about mob activity. Humpty, who runs a carousel, agrees to take her in, provided she puts money aside for college, and Ginny finds her waitressing work. Ginny is a former actress, unhappy in her second marriage, and has been having an affair with Mickey Rubin, a young lifeguard who wants to write plays.
