Plot summary
Border City sits on the Arkansas-Missouri border, and its mayor, Delilah Courtney, warns both sides of the Civil War to stay five miles from the neutral town or face arrest. Delilah also owns the mine, selling iron ore to Union and Confederate buyers alike. Sally Maris, a Michigan school teacher, comes to find her brother, Bitterroot Bill, who runs a saloon, and twelve years have left her disappointed in the man he is now. Charles Quantrill, a former Confederate officer turned marauder, brings his gang into the region with his wife Kate, whom he abducted from Border City two years earlier. Kate and Bill were once engaged.
