Plot summary
Three impacts land in remote spots along the 45th parallel: Wyoming's Thunder Basin National Grassland, southern France and the Gobi Desert in China. Television coverage treats them as an unfolding worldwide event, with Dr. Caroline Jaffe among those reporting and scientists and eyewitnesses weighing in. A badly burned girl and a young man are pulled from the Wyoming and France sites, both unable to speak clearly. NASA links the strikes to 6645 Venturi, an asteroid that fragmented above the North Pole, and the sites begin sending out a radio signal that disables aircraft flying near the parallel. A second asteroid is then detected following the same path.

- The broadcast drew dozens of calls to CBS's Fort Smith, Arkansas, affiliate KFSM-TV about the incident and whether it was actually happening, and the area's ABC, Fox and NBC stations were flooded with complaints asking why they weren't covering the event. In Detroit (WJBK) and San Diego (KFMB-TV), the local CBS stations refused to air the film at all.
- As a homage to Orson Welles' 1938 The War of the Worlds radio broadcast, the film sets the fictional town of Grover's Mill, Wyoming, borrowing the name of the New Jersey village Welles used as the Martians' first landing site.
- To tip off attentive viewers that it wasn't real, the film used 'accelerated time', in which events said to be an hour apart happen minutes apart, and mentioned that year's G7 Summit, which had already come and gone three months before the film's release.
- To make the fake newscast feel real, the producers used actual CBS News graphics, changing only the network logo to a sphere inside the outline of a TV screen.
