Plot summary
Sabriye Tenberken, a blind social worker from Germany, opened Lhasa's first school for blind students, and six Tibetan teenagers study there. Their families once feared them, villagers scorn them, and some devout Buddhists consider them sinners. After hearing that Erik Weihenmayer, a blind mountain climber, had reached the summit of Everest, the students ask him to come. He travels to Lhasa and, with their teachers, trains them, taking them higher than they have climbed before. The group sets out for Lhakpa Ri, a 23,000-foot peak in Everest's shadow, hoping to stand on its summit.
