Plot summary
In a small town in 1938, Sammy Perkins and his sister Ellie come across Alice, who lives by herself in a shack without heat. Her stepfather sent her there because of her hearing loss and her epilepsy. Alice's mother Ada married the man before he became abusive. Sammy and Ellie grow close to Alice even though their father has concerns about her stepfather's known cruelty. The two of them bring her help: their grandmother, who teaches her, and the town's doctor, who acquires a hearing aid for her and medicine that substantially reduces how often and how severely her seizures come.
