Plot summary
In the near future, the Wifelike company manufactures android replicas of deceased women for grieving widowers. The companions are subservient but slowly gain consciousness. William Bradwell is an agent who locates stolen androids and returns them. He orders a companion made to resemble his late wife, Meredith. As the android studies Meredith to become more like her, she begins dreaming of a masked man who says he knew her before her last memory wipe. Louise, a member of the activist group S.C.A.I.R., visits her; the group considers companions slaves and steals or reprograms them to fight the company. The surfacing memories make the android question her reality.
