Plot summary

Billy and Ray have known each other since childhood. After a global apocalypse kills almost everyone, they are the last two people alive: Billy, who was president of the United States, and Ray, the scientist and former adviser who built the dome that shields them from the outside environment. A fishpond helps power the dome, and the two are distressed when its last female fish dies, leaving a pair of males, one of which looks close to death. Ray stays positive, often retelling the trick a magician performed at his eighth birthday, when a bowling ball drawn on paper landed on the floor with a thud. Billy, meanwhile, becomes nauseous and feverish.
