Plot summary

The second entry in the Why We Fight series presents the Nazis as the newest version of a German push for expansion that reaches back to Otto von Bismarck in 1863. The Heartland Theory of Halford Mackinder supplies the frame: hold Eastern Europe and most of Asia, and the rest of the planet follows. Hitler means to outdo Genghis Khan. Karl Haushofer heads a Munich institute where this ambition is turned into a working plan. Germany rearms on a huge scale, while fascist groups abroad prepare the ground in the democracies: the German American Bund, the British Union of Fascists, the French Cross of Fire, the Belgian Rexists, and the party of Konrad Henlein. Hitler's first target is Austria.

  • Because the film was made while the Soviets were allied with the Western Allies, it repeats Soviet propaganda: it justifies the Soviet invasion of Poland as a buffer against a further Nazi advance and implies the Soviets entered Poland to stop Hitler, omitting Soviet battles against Polish border forces and Soviet atrocities.
