Plot summary
The snake-demon sisters Xiaoqing and Xiaobai challenge Fahai, the demon-slaying monk, at Zhenjiang to free Xiaobai's husband, Xu Xian. They lose: Xiaobai is imprisoned beneath the Leifeng Pagoda, and Xiaoqing, who blames Xu Xian for his weakness, is overpowered and pulled through a portal. She wakes in Shura City, a place that traps creatures from many eras, stripped of her demonic powers. A woman called Sun helps her adapt to a modern world she does not know, and a masked man with amnesia saves her from danger. An army of Ox-Heads and Horse-Faces holds the city, its leader set on conquest, while Xiaoqing's only aim is to get free and rescue her sister.
