Plot summary
On Mount Huaguo a crystal that fell from Heaven becomes a monkey over time. Subhuti takes him in, trains him, and names him Sun Wukong. Meanwhile the Bull Demon King, banished to Flaming Mountain after losing a battle against the Jade Emperor, plans another assault on Heaven and wants Wukong as his means of reaching it. He also approaches Erlang Shen, guardian of the Southern Gate, who resents his uncle the Jade Emperor. A nine-tailed fox named Ruxue, scarred by the crystal long ago, meets her old friend Wukong again. Wukong goes to the Dragon King's palace seeking weapons and pulls a staff out of the sea, and Heaven takes notice of the destruction he leaves behind.

- The Monkey King scored the highest-grossing opening day in China with RMB121 million (US$20.0 million), beating Iron Man 3, and became the first Chinese film to take RMB100 million on its first day.
- Zhang Zilin, the winner of Miss World 2007, played the goddess Nüwa, replacing Cecilia Cheung, who had originally been cast in the role; Zhang said she had never heard that Cheung was to be in the film.
- When the film was first announced in 2010, both Jet Li and Donnie Yen were eyed for a role, and Yen was cast as the title role of the Monkey King that May.
- Michael Wehrhahn said in 2013 that two versions of the film were being produced: a Mandarin China version and an English international US version with a special guest US celebrity, extra characters, more scenes and special effects.
