Plot summary
Maria Vial farms coffee in an unnamed African country, working the land with André, her ex-husband, and his father, Henri. Their plantation is failing. A rebellion has taken hold, and rebel soldiers, among them children, are advancing on the region. The French military prepares to pull out and makes a last appeal for Maria to go, but she will not give up the family home. Her workers, afraid of the fighting to come, run off. The harvest will be ready within five days, and Maria is set on bringing it in. André is nowhere to be found, so she drives to a village to recruit workers; bandits at a roadblock make her pay to pass.
