Plot summary
François Grimbert grows up in Paris in the 1950s, a slight, unathletic boy beside parents built for sport, Maxime and Tania. He longs for an older brother, stronger and more charming than he is. Of the family's past he knows almost nothing: the war years are never discussed, and he is raised Catholic. A neighbor tells him that the family is Jewish, and that discovery sets him on a long reconstruction of his parents' history, which he continues as a physician, trying to understand what happened to them before he was born.
