Plot summary
Wallace is a young Englishman living in Toronto, where he works a dead-end job and shares a home with his sister and her son. He quit medical school a year ago and keeps to himself. His best friend Allan persuades him to come to a party, and there he meets Allan's cousin Chantry. Walking her home, he finds out she has a boyfriend of long standing. She hands him her phone number anyway, but he chooses not to dial it. They meet again by chance at a movie theater and have dinner, and they agree to keep things friendly.

- After test screenings with focus groups showed audiences wanted a more conclusive ending, the filmmakers shot new scenes in Toronto in November 2013, set 18 months later. Star Daniel Radcliffe initially had reservations about changing the ending but said he was "really happy with it".
- Casey Affleck was originally attached to play the lead in the film, but Daniel Radcliffe replaced him. Radcliffe said having a role in the film was important to him because he had never starred in a contemporary movie.
- U.S. distributor CBS Films changed the title from The F Word to What If after the Motion Picture Association of America took issue with the implied word "fuck"; according to producer David Gross, the MPAA also strove for a PG-13 rating.
