Plot summary
College student Jay Gardiner returns to California after the death of his father, Mitt. Their relationship was contentious, and Jay had stopped speaking to Mitt during his terminal illness; he also left Mitt's letter unread. Mitt did not die in a hospital. He tied weights to himself and jumped into the Pacific, so his family had no body to mourn. Mitt had taught Jay to scuba dive as a child, and Jay takes a tank holding one hour of oxygen and sets out to find the body. At the edge of a submarine canyon, Jay sees a giant squid and a sperm whale fighting. A tentacle from the squid coils around his leg, and the whale swallows him. Jay regains consciousness inside one of the whale's three stomach chambers, where he drives the squid back.
