Plot summary
Eastern Spain's rice fields are in the grip of a hard drought when Laguna Blanca is declared a nature preserve. Ricardo, a respected biologist, arrives in San Pedro, the village where he grew up as a boy, to look after the lagoon. His family is going through tough times, and he is convinced the move will help them. His mission is to stop the illegal and abusive use the people around the lagoon make of it. For them, though, the water is their livelihood, and they take Ricardo for a traitor. The pressure on him and the threats against him keep getting worse.
