Plot summary
A natural gas pipeline proposed by businessman Sam Parker has split Beaverfield, a small Vermont town, into feuding camps. Finn Wheeler, a newly arrived forest ranger, takes a room at the hunting lodge run by Jeanine Sherman, at the center of village life. He befriends Cecily Moore, the mail carrier, who shows him the town and shares local gossip. Among the residents are Devon and Joaquim Wolfson, Gwen and Marcus, who hope to profit from the pipeline, Trisha and her husband Pete, and the reclusive Emerson Flint. Then a blizzard cuts the power and forces everyone to shelter together at the lodge. A creature begins stalking the group, and the ranger tries to keep the townspeople safe from one another as well as from it.

- The Beaverfield Inn was played by Spillian in Fleischmanns, New York, a retreat center that was once the estate of the historic Fleischmanns Yeast family; it also served as the production's headquarters.
