Plot summary
In France, police led by Captain Klaus Pistor find Claire Porter wounded in a hospital bed and her husband Henry and son Peter mauled to death by an unknown animal. Claire says the shadowy figure resembled a man, and the police arrest Talan Gwynek, a local man, for the murders. Expatriate lawyer Kate Moore takes his defense, adding investigator Eric Sarin and English animal expert Dr. Gavin Flemyng, whom she was romantically involved with five years earlier. Kate interviews Talan at the station, where a scuffle with the police leaves Gavin scratched as he shields her. The team drives to Talan's isolated house in the woods to question his mother, who describes a rare hereditary ailment affecting the men of the family and says the government wants their land for nuclear waste.
