Plot summary
Giuseppe Garibaldi, whom everyone calls Peppino, works in the library of a small Piedmont town. He likes to read, to bring culture to children even when the library has no funds, and to fish in the river. In Rome the parties fail to agree on a president, so their leaders cast a protest vote for a historical figure and, without meaning to, all choose the name Giuseppe Garibaldi. A real citizen bears exactly that name, and by law he must take the office. Peppino leaves his quiet life for a role he knows he is unsuited to. Janis Clementi, Deputy Secretary General of the Presidency, tries without success to fit his unpredictable gestures to the rules of etiquette.
