Plot summary
In Maybrook, Pennsylvania, seventeen students of Justine Gandy's third-grade class run from their houses in the middle of the night and are not seen again. The one child still there is Alex Lilly. Parents of the missing accuse Justine of having a hand in it, and the school places her on administrative leave. Archer Graff, a construction contractor whose son Matthew is among the missing, distrusts her more than the others do. Paul Morgan, a police officer and Justine's former boyfriend, is now married. Justine returns to drinking. With the investigation producing no leads, Archer begins looking into the case himself, comparing doorbell footage from his house with that of another family. Both he and Justine have nightmares about the missing children.

- Zach Cregger sent the Weapons script to studios one morning, and Warner Bros. Pictures CEO Michael De Luca contacted him before 8:00 a.m. to close the deal; the exchange took under 90 minutes. New Line secured the rights within 24 hours by offering $38 million to cover all costs, including production and salaries.
- Amy Madigan's Academy Award win for Best Supporting Actress was her first Academy Award nomination since 1986, the longest gap between two nominations for an actress.
- Zach Cregger cast Amy Madigan as Aunt Gladys after liking her in Field of Dreams and spotting her on a list of potential choices; he said she "saved" the film. He gave Madigan two possible origins for Gladys, a dying woman using witchcraft or an immortal being imitating a human, without asking which she chose.
- Pedro Pascal and Renate Reinsve were announced in May 2023 alongside Brian Tyree Henry and Austin Abrams, but the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes caused schedule conflicts for all four actors, especially Pascal. Josh Brolin replaced Pascal in February 2024.

The film originally ended with a silent shot of Matthew Graff; after that ending got negative reactions at a test screening, a voiceover from the child narrator was added.- Zach Cregger wrote the screenplay after the death of his close friend and collaborator Trevor Moore, of The Whitest Kids U' Know, and a reference to a sketch Moore wrote for the troupe was added to the finished script.
- On the busiest days of filming, 170 children were involved, and child labor coordinators were hired to keep the kids engaged outside of filming.
- Weapons' $43.5 million debut made Warner Bros. the first studio in history to have six consecutive films open at number one with more than $40 million, following A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, Final Destination Bloodlines, F1 and Superman.
