Plot summary
In an alternate 1985 where costumed heroes have existed since World War II, Richard Nixon remains president and the United States has won the Vietnam War with the help of Doctor Manhattan. Eddie Blake, an aging government operative who once fought as the Comedian, is thrown to his death from his apartment window. Rorschach, a former colleague who now works outside the law, opens his own inquiry and decides that someone is hunting former heroes. He visits his surviving allies to warn them, and most of them pay him little attention. He looks for Edward Jacobi, a retired supervillain called Moloch the Mystic. Laurie Juspeczyk, the second Silk Spectre, finds her relationship with Doctor Manhattan lacking in passion, as his research distracts him, and she renews her friendship with Dan Dreiberg, once the second Nite Owl.
