Plot summary
Dr. Austin Sloper lives with his daughter Catherine in his house on Washington Square. Her mother died in childbirth, and her father, still grieving, answers her with irony. Catherine is shy and awkward in the social graces of her class. Her widowed aunt, Lavinia Penniman, comes to live with them as a chaperone. At a party for her cousin Marian Almond's engagement, Catherine meets Morris Townsend, a handsome young man whose attentions astonish her. He calls at the house regularly, and she falls in love. Her father suspects Townsend is a fortune hunter. Lavinia, fond of melodrama, encourages the courtship against his wishes. Townsend proposes, and Sloper refuses his consent and threatens to disinherit her.
