Plot summary
In an alternate World War I, two armies have fought to a stalemate across No man's land. A soldier on the left side plays chess against an opponent he has never met, writing his moves as black on slips of paper and sending them across the battlefield with a messenger pigeon he keeps as a pet. The opponent, playing white from the right side of the field, is just as unaware of who is playing him. Over time, soldiers in both armies begin to follow the game. The pigeon crosses the battlefield between them as the fighting continues.
