Plot summary
Emilio Mendez is a seventeen-year-old Chicano in Los Angeles and a member of a gang. The gang life is not what he wants, but he does not know how to get out. He takes pride in his Native Mexican heritage, and he is falling for Sarah Lassiter, a white girl who tells him to try to leave the gang. His father is a European-American man who got Emilio's mother pregnant when she was sixteen, a fact that adds to a crisis over who he is.
