Plot summary
Prem, the younger son of the Delhi businessman Harishchandra, feels he is too young for marriage and wants to establish himself in his work before settling down. His father asks him to meet Poonam at least once. Poonam is a young woman from Madhupur whose parents died when she was a child; her uncle Krishnakant raised her, and his wife Rama is jealous of her beauty. Bhagatji, a jeweller who is a friend of Krishnakant, thinks highly of Poonam and carries her marriage proposal to Prem. Prem agrees to the visit, and the two are drawn to each other, so the engagement is settled. Krishnakant invites Prem's family to his summer place at Som Sarovar so the pair can spend time together, and their attachment grows there before work calls the family back to Delhi.

- The painter M. F. Husain made a series of paintings inspired by Amrita Rao and Vivah, planned an entire exhibition around her, and held a private screening of the film for 150 friends and press at Dubai's Plaza cinema.
- Vivah was the first Indian film to be simultaneously released in cinema and on the internet, through the production company's own official site.
- Barjatya had art director Sanjay Dhobade build the entire town of Madhupur as a set at Film City, Mumbai, complete with leaking water and spit marks on the walls of its buildings.
