Plot summary
Badrinarayan Chaturvedi heads a former royal family in Varanasi whose ancestral palace is said to be haunted by Manjulika, a Bengali classical dancer. Siddharth, the dynasty's current successor, returns from the United States with his wife Avni, an archeologist, and their marriage leaves Badrinarayan's adopted daughter Radha heartbroken. Avni digs into the legend: a Maharaja once beheaded Manjulika's fellow dancer and imprisoned her, and she vowed revenge on every successor before hanging herself, after which priests sealed her spirit on the third floor. Avni obtains a duplicate key, opens that door, and strange events follow, including an apparition that terrifies the household. Radha, present at each incident, draws suspicion, and Siddharth sends for his psychiatrist friend Aditya Shrivastava to make sense of it.

- Madhu, writer of the original Malayalam film, has been credited as the sole writer of the remakes after he filed a copyright suit against director Fazil, who had begun being listed as the original script's writer.
- The 2007 film remakes the 1993 Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu, which traces its story to a 19th-century tragedy at Alummoottil tharavad, a traditional mansion in Muttom, near Haripad in central Travancore.
- The title song "Bhool Bhulaiyaa", commonly known as "Hare Ram Hare Ram, Hare Krishna Hare Ram", was sung by Neeraj Shridhar, who also sang it for the sequel, and reportedly samples JtL's "My Lecon".
- Though it drew mixed reviews from critics on release, the film has attained cult status, with praise going to Akshay Kumar's psychiatrist character and Vidya Balan's portrayals of Avni and Manjulika.
