1. First role

   Marshall's first professional role came in a 1962 Columbia Studios feature, The Interns, and he was uncredited in that part.

2. Big break

   Marshall met Irwin Allen after appearing in the pilot episode "Braddock" of Premiere, and that meeting led to his role on Land of the Giants.

3. A first

   In a series created by Irwin Allen, Marshall had a leading role as a capable African-American. This was a first for an African-American man in 1960s science fiction, shared only by Nichelle Nichols, Greg Morris and Bill Cosby.

4. Own stunts

   Marshall was athletic, which helped on set because the actors did many of their own stunts. He said his earlier work in football, track and pole vaulting let him do many of the required stunts.

5. Early training

   Marshall studied acting at the Bob Gist Dramatic Workshop and took a theater arts course at Los Angeles City College, where he also pole vaulted for the track team.

6. Behind the camera

   Marshall retired from acting and then started his own company, DJM Productions, Inc. That company made documentary films as well as commercials for television.
