Plot summary

Fifteen-year-old Valeria Arabova, called Lera, lives in Vladivostok with her mother Svetlana, her stepfather Boris and her younger stepbrother Yegor. A fire in an elevator when she was small left her afraid of flames and ended her parents' marriage. Her father, flight engineer Valery Arabov, is aboard the space station Mira, where he follows her through satellites and an artificial intelligence system; apart from that, the two are estranged. Arabov's crew tracks a meteor shower expected to pass harmlessly over the Western Pacific, though a colleague warns that its size and course may change. The shower strikes the station and wide stretches of the Russian Far East. Lera sees the impact and flees her building, meeting her school friend Misha.
