Plot summary

Diego and Elena are a common-law couple who leave Barcelona for the United States after she wins a diversity visa. Diego is a Venezuelan urbanist; Elena is a contemporary dancer. They arrive at Newark Airport excited about a new life and a family. At passport control Diego has misplaced his declaration form, so Elena fills out another. The agent who scans their passports fingerprints them, photographs them and walks them to a secondary inspection area, where a connecting flight to Miami buys them no speed. Thirty minutes pass and no food or water is offered. Their bags are searched again, a dog goes over them, their bodies are searched, and Elena's insulin and needle are taken away. Then the questioning starts, about documents, accounts, their civil union and their reasons for coming.
