Plot summary
Ruby Diamond, a country singer who speaks her mind, dies when her car crashes on the drive home from a bar. In heaven, Saint Peter tells her she may return to Earth, but only to bring back together a suburban family that fell apart after the mother died. If she manages it by midnight on Christmas Eve, she earns her wings as an angel. Ruby reaches the Bartilson house and presents herself as a housekeeper and nanny. The children, Sarah and Matthew, stay in their rooms, and their father Ben is distracted and distant. All three keep Ruby at a distance at first.
