Plot summary
Evangeline Babic, known as Evy, has a Catholic upbringing and lives alone with her comatose mother, whom she looks after. With her friend Justin she makes The Undertone, a podcast about the supernatural, and on it she calls such reports hoaxes while he takes them as real. An anonymous email addressed to Justin carries a meaningless string of letters and ten sound files, which the two of them air. A married couple, Mike and Jessa, made the recordings: Jessa speaks in her sleep and Mike wanted proof of it. On the earliest file Jessa, asleep, sings "London Bridge". Justin reverses it and is sure he hears an instruction. Curious about messages hidden in children's songs, Evy starts to investigate.

- Ian Tuason drew on his own life for Undertone: the film was inspired in part by him caring for his parents in the early 2020s while they faced terminal cancer.
- Undertone started life as a radio play that Tuason later turned into a film screenplay using some of his own experiences, and it was shot inside his own childhood home.
- Evy and her mother are the only characters the audience ever sees in Undertone; every other character is an off-screen voice, so the film's horror is carried by its sound design.
- Tuason said he left the visuals bare instead of hiding details the way Mike Flanagan does, deciding after watching The Babadook and spotting a jacket on an old rack that he would just hang a jacket on a chair.
- Undertone was made for a budget of $500,000 and grossed $21.6 million, a striking return for a film with only two on-screen performers.
