Plot summary
Charlie runs the Mid-County Community Center, where a karate coach has just quit. Jimmy "The Lightning Bolt" Lee, a mixed martial arts champion whose own career ended three years earlier in an accident, comes home, and Charlie, his old mentor, asks him to take over the group: Wyatt, Leticia, Raymond, Ricky and brothers Alex and Sean. Jimmy agrees to teach them while he works out a comeback, though the kids, coping with poverty, bullying and loss, are wary of him at first. Their first competition brings them face to face with the Beverly Hills Scorpions, three-time national junior karate champions coached by Ted Barrett, a rival from Jimmy's childhood who still holds a grudge. With the kids humiliated, Jimmy hunts for a sponsor, and old friend Big Mama, who sells food from a truck, steps in.
