Plot summary
A famous Irish Terrier, Rexxx performs stunts in Hollywood blockbusters and expects star treatment. When lightning strikes during a skydiving stunt, the plane malfunctions and he tumbles out, landing in a tomato truck far from his owner, Trey Falcon. In South Harbor, Shane Fahey is mourning his uncle, a fire captain, when he skips science class and is brought to the firehouse called Dogpatch, home to Engine 55. His father Connor, the new captain, and the crew are trying to keep the station, short of funding and beset by bad publicity, from closing. After a call to a burning apartment building, Connor rescues the dog from the roof. The name on the collar leads the crew to call him Dewey and keep him until an owner comes forward.

- The film's canine star, Rexxx/Dewey, was actually played by four different Irish Terriers, all named after characters and places from The Lord of the Rings: Arwen, Frodo, Rohan and Stryder.
- The fire station's garage was not a real building but a structure built specifically for the movie at 455 Cherry Street in Toronto, and it was torn down again once filming wrapped.
