Plot summary

Trevor Anderson is a Boston volcanologist whose brother Max vanished ten years ago. His 13-year-old nephew Sean arrives for a ten-day stay while Sean's mother Elizabeth prepares a move to Canada, and she leaves Trevor a box of Max's belongings. In it Trevor finds a copy of Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth filled with Max's notes, and he decides to retrace his brother's route to Iceland, taking Sean along. There they meet Hannah Ásgeirsson, whose father Sigurbjörn has died; she tells them both men believed Verne's books were true accounts. She guides them up a mountain toward an instrument that has begun transmitting data again, and a lightning storm drives the three into a cave.
