Plot summary
Amanda, a Korean immigrant, lives on a rural farm with her homeschooled daughter, Chrissy. They keep bees, sell honey and raise chickens, and the household runs without modern technology, because Amanda says electronics and electricity make her ill. Chrissy wants to leave the farm to go to college, which Amanda does not want. Then Amanda's uncle, Mr. Kang, visits from Korea with a suitcase holding the cremated remains of Umma, the mother Amanda has been estranged from. The ashes bring back memories of an abusive childhood, and Mr. Kang reproaches Amanda for abandoning her mother and her heritage and for not teaching Chrissy the Korean language and customs.
