Plot summary
Ulee Jackson is a beekeeper in Wewahitchka, Florida, whose family has kept bees for three generations. Since the death of his wife Penelope he has stayed close to his hives, and he asks nobody for help. His son Jimmy is serving a prison sentence after a bank robbery went wrong, and Jimmy's wife Helen left their daughters and moved to Orlando. Ulee is raising the two girls, Casey, a rebellious teenager, and Penny, ten years old and unsettled by her parents' absence, while keeping the business going alone. When Ulee visits Jimmy in prison, Jimmy says that Helen has appeared at the Orlando house of Eddie Flowers and Ferris Dooley, the two men who took part in the robbery and were never caught. They say she is ill, and Jimmy wants Ulee to bring her back.
