Plot summary
Abner Peabody and his partner Lum Edwards run the Jot 'Em Down general store in the Arkansas town of Pine Ridge. Stock Abner inherits from his Uncle Ernest makes him owner of the C&O Railroad, which he takes for the Chicago and Ohio line. Lum names himself president and sells shares to the townspeople, raising close to $10,000 to buy the land the railway stands on. In Chicago, the partners find a worn-out local line worth about $200, and their telegram warning Pine Ridge against the land purchase arrives too late. Coming down from the attorney's office, Abner falls hard on the stairs. A mix-up of identities at a doctor's office leaves him told he has only two weeks to live.
