Stefan Schnabel
Biography
Stefan Schnabel was a German-American actor whose career took in theater, radio, film and television. Born in Berlin to the pianist Artur Schnabel and the contralto Therese Behr Schnabel, he trained with the Old Vic in England, where he made his stage debut in 1933. He emigrated to New York in 1937 and joined Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre, appearing in its Broadway Julius Caesar and on the radio series The Mercury Theatre on the Air. His screen debut came in Journey into Fear (1943), and he appeared in more than 60 films, among them The Iron Curtain (1948), Houdini (1953), The Counterfeit Traitor (1962), Firefox (1982) and Green Card (1990). After more than 100 television dramas, he became best known as Dr. Stephen Jackson on the CBS soap opera Guiding Light, a role he played for 17 years. He died in 1999.

Stefan Schnabel first appeared on stage in 1933, providing off-stage wind sounds for The Tempest. He later acted in the 1937 Hamlet that starred Laurence Olivier.
A role that slipped away
When Mercury Productions relocated to the West Coast, Welles cast Schnabel in Heart of Darkness, the movie Welles first pitched to RKO Pictures before choosing Citizen Kane instead. Elaborate pre-production followed, but the project never went into production.
