Plot summary
James Powers is sixteen and American-born, living in rural Ireland with his younger brother Pete and their three aunts, who took the boys in after their mother died six years earlier. James hates the place and yearns for New York. He has dropped out of school and gathers money little by little through small bar bets and errands for Bill the Bookie. Tom, a fisherman and gambler, is his other friend. James admires Fiona from a distance, and his aunts, puzzled by the hours he spends locked in the bathroom, fear he might be ill. They send him to London to see a medical specialist, where he discovers magazines that are illegal in Ireland and strikes a deal with a London newsagent to import them.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Turning Green (2005)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- After weeks of searching for an actor who balanced adult and child, the 17-year-old Donal Gallery, who had never acted professionally, auditioned for James Powers and was given the part on the spot. James appears in virtually every scene of the film.
- Unhappy with the producer's cut and how it was marketed, Michael Aimette and John G. Hofmann made their own director's cut with a different, more comedic ending; it won the Audience Award at The Craic Film Festival in 2007.
- For its 2009 limited US release, New Films International used the original cut of Turning Green rather than the directors' version, because re-finishing that version was too expensive.
- The opening animated sequence, in which James and Pete ride a New York subway before being released into the Irish wilderness, was drawn by Phil Jungmann, an advertising creative director and friend of the directors, and made in Flash.
- Budget constraints kept the 1970s artists named in the script, Queen, ELO and Led Zeppelin, out of the film; the soundtrack instead used indie acts including Nada Surf, Iron & Wine and the Caesars.
