Plot summary
Annie Cameron is fourteen and lives in a Chicago suburb with her parents, Will and Lynn, and her brother and sister. For her fourteenth birthday they give her a laptop, and in a teen chat room she meets a boy named Charlie. He tells her he is sixteen, then twenty, then twenty-five. Over two months of online messages and phone calls, Annie comes to believe that she and Charlie are in love, and he asks her to meet him at a mall. The person waiting there is a man in his late thirties.

- Schwimmer based the story on fourteen years of volunteer work with the Rape Foundation and seven years of research, and the screenplay went through roughly fifty drafts during that seven-year development period.
