Plot summary
In modern Manhattan, the rich Capulets and the poor Ques are at odds. Tromeo Que shares his father Monty's squalid home and works in a tattoo parlor alongside his cousin Benny and his friend Murray. Juliet Capulet is sequestered in the family mansion under an abusive father, Cappy, a passive mother, Ingrid, and an overprotective cousin, Tyrone, and Cappy intends her to marry London Arbuckle, a wealthy meat tycoon. Tromeo lusts after Rosie. When Murray and Sammy Capulet duel, Detective Ernie Scalus summons the heads of both families and warns them that he will hold them personally answerable for any further breach of the peace. Tromeo goes to the Capulets' masquerade ball hoping to meet Rosie, and locks eyes with Juliet there instead.

- In 1995 newcomer screenwriter James Gunn completely rewrote the script of Tromeo & Juliet, again in Shakespearean verse but darker and more obscene: in his version Juliet was a stripper and Tromeo a crack dealer. Kaufman then trimmed the verse and added comic material.
- The first draft of Tromeo & Juliet was written in 1992 by Lloyd Kaufman with Troma employees Andy Deemer and Phil Rivo, entirely in Shakespearean verse and supposedly with The Toxic Avenger as a side character. Troma staff and Michael Herz hated it, so the idea was scrapped.
- Director Lloyd Kaufman gave Will Keenan and Jane Jensen pre-production time to block their sex scene themselves. The pair decided not to have off-screen intercourse until after the movie, which Kaufman said gave their on-screen scenes terrific sexual tension.
- Tromeo and Juliet was shot in the summer of 1995 for $350,000, which the article calls one of the most expensive films in the history of Troma Entertainment.
