Plot summary
Ruth, a music journalist from New York, travels to Poland with her father, Edek, a Holocaust survivor. They plan to visit the house where he grew up, what remains of the family business, and the camp at Auschwitz. Ruth wants to make sense of her family's history. Edek speaks Polish fluently and makes friends easily, appearing at home wherever they go. That ease hides a deep distrust of Polish people and a reluctance to dig into the past. He has his own reasons for the trip.
