Plot summary
A fire leaves Micky in a hospital with severe burns and no memory of her life. The doctors show her photographs of friends and relatives, and she recognizes none of them. She is told that she lives in London, that she lost her parents in a car crash at nine, and that her aunt Elinor raised her and has since died. Discharged once her injuries have healed, she goes home with Elinor's personal assistant Julia, who is now her guardian. A young man named Jake calls, and Julia tells him Micky is not ready; she later explains Jake was Micky's boyfriend. Julia also tells her that on her twenty-first birthday she inherits Elinor's estate. Among the photographs Micky finds one of Domenica Law, known as Do.
