Plot summary
Three hundred years before the machine uprising, a California driver dies when her cell phone transforms into a robotic spider. Dr. Jo Summers reads about the case in the newspaper and the morgue cannot account for the wound. Jake Van Ryberg, newly back from a military deployment, arrives at Madison Ryan's house to fix her television and sees her satellite dish become a machine. Officer Hadley Ryan hears the account from Madison and Jake and takes them with him to search for the dead driver's missing phone. Federal agents pull Jo Summers into their own inquiry, and she urges Hadley to find that phone.
