Jobyna Howland
Biography
Jobyna Howland was an American actress of the stage and screen. Born in Indianapolis, she performed as an amateur before leaving Denver to try professional theater. Her December 1897 work included A Milk White Flag, presented at the Tacoma Theater in Tacoma, Washington. She later performed in San Francisco with a touring company led by Clay Clement. She also modeled for Charles Dana Gibson. Her New York stage debut came in 1899 under Daniel Frohman's management. On stage she ranged from drawing room farce to musical comedy, usually as the other woman, a friend's companion or a distant relative. Rupert of Hentzau in 1899 gave her a Broadway debut as Queen Flavia. Her final Broadway appearance, as Amy Bellaire in O Evening Star, came in 1936. She later tried silent pictures, then sound films, where she often played the domineering but dependable support she had handled on stage; the Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey comedies are among her best known.
