Plot summary
Over a century and a half, Tokyo has been reduced to ruins and built up again. An earthquake leveled the city in 1923, and incendiary bombing raids did the same in 1945. After each disaster, the people of the capital set about reconstruction, and the old feudal city of Edo turned into the world's largest and most futuristic capital. That transformation was driven by the resilience of its inhabitants, and a unique cultural hybridization nourished it. Colorized and restored archival footage carries the story across the decades, following the destruction, the rebuilding and the influences the city absorbed from elsewhere.
